Permanent: Software Developer – Junior (Ruby, SQL, JAVA)

Vacancy Description: 

The role will be working with senior software developers to develop front-end web and server-side software.  Ruby skills are needed but you may have acquired these from your own learning rather than in a commercial environment 

Primary responsibilities

  •  Develop programs and scripts using appropriate technologies for Linux and Windows environments.
  • Be sensitive to the context of business needs, maximize the use of best practices, testing, code quality and facilitate ongoing development and maintenance.
  • Take an active role in the full development life-cycle, from specification to deployment.
  • Use insight and understanding of technical considerations to apply generalized guidance from senior software developers to specific tasks.
  • Diligently assist in technical tasks under the guidance of senior software developers, showing initiative and contributing creatively to solutions
  • Helping set up auxiliary and supporting elements to the software development cycle including unit tests, testing, preparing test data, documentation and contributing to the analysis of requirements. 

Secondary responsibilities 

  • Acquire knowledge and awareness of the systems and applications used by the team.
  • Increase technical experience and knowledge as required by the team. 

Skills and experience 

  • Ruby (personal or professional use)
  • SQL (exposure)
  • JavaScript, HTML, CSS (exposure)
  • Object orientation theory and practice
  • An ability to understand both technical and business requirements
  • An ability to analyse and creatively solve unfamiliar problems
  • A willingness to follow instructions and guidance from more senior software developers
  • A commitment to quality and a thorough approach to work
  • Careful attention to detail


  • Java programming experience
  • Database experience
  • Linux experience, including bash scripting
