Middleware J2EE Engineer - Operations - JBoss on Unix / Linux and Windows operating systems

This role involves working within the Operations team and assisting in the support and maintenance of middleware software products with a core competency in JBoss on UNIX / Linux and Windows operating systems. The role is for an International Finance Company - comprising 2,700 users over 25 sites in 17 countries. The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and be comfortable working within a truly global environment. 

Extensive working experience in JBoss installation, configuration and administration.

 Position Objectives:

  • Provide internal and external customers with excellent customer service while striving to provide world-class service.

  • Provide technical support for projects as part of a wider team of Operations Engineers

  • Effectively communicate current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the line manager.

  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.

  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks.

  • Plan, prioritize, and provide vision and schedules for assigned software and / or hardware changes.

  • Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades.   

  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate.

  • Support the JBoss 5.x Middleware stack for the Enterprise. Lead the support of a highly available Jboss infrastructure platform.

  • Install, configure and maintain JBoss EAP, JBoss EWS, Apache and JBoss on UNIX / Linux and Windows Operating systems.

  • Tune JBoss EAP parameters for optimal system performance.

  • Deploy application packages / archives onto JBoss EAP.  Support connectivity from end users and data sources, including AD SSO and federated sources.

  • Perform the High Availability patterns of JBoss EAP to support both local failure and disaster recovery.

  • Harden JBoss EAP to current enterprise security standards.  Install routine security related patches.

  • Provide 2nd level support for JBoss for end users, application and administration teams. The candidate must be comfortable in addressing critical incidents.

  • Provide systems metrics, root cause analysis and proactive monitoring and communicate any performance degradation to management.

  • Adhere to all company authored policy, procedure and standards documents.

  • Author policy, procedure and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience.

  • Ensure ongoing adherence to all relevant compliance regulations that may govern the GM Financial UK Plc business and complete all regulatory knowledge training where applicable in a timely fashion.

  • Provide support for critical system changes outside of business hours.

  • To participate in an on call rota with other members of the team.

     

    Qualifications & Experience:

  • Successful candidate will have extensive experience working with enterprise level JBoss services including extensive project related work, preferably application development projects and packaged application installation projects.

  • Experience of supporting global organizations.

  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving data integrity issues, performance issues, replication issues, log issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.

  • Extensive experience performing JBoss software installation, application installation,   Environment sizing, Environment performance tuning

  • Red Hat certified preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to build on others ideas.

  • Strong knowledge of JBoss EAP, Apache, Tomcat.

  • Thorough knowledge of F5 load balancing /  clustering (LTM/GTM)

  • Thorough knowledge of automated deployment scripting / tools for J2EE environments.

  • Knowledge of Linux and Windows UNIX scripting (e.g. perl / powershell)

  • Expert knowledge of troubleshooting JBoss environment from a performance and capacity perspective

 

Knowledge of Weblogic application server platform.
