Oracle DBA - Operations (RDBMS 11g / 12c)

This role involves working within the Operations and assisting in the support and maintenance of Oracle RDBMS infrastructure and services.  The role is for an International Finance Company - comprising 2,700 users over 25 sites in 17 countries. The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and be comfortable working within a truly global environment. Extensive experience in Oracle Database installation, configuration and administration.

Position Objectives:

  • Provide internal and external customers with excellent customer service while striving to provide world-class service.

  • Provide technical support for projects as part of a wider team of Operations Engineers

  • Effectively communicate current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the line manager.

  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.

  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks.

  • Plan, prioritize, and provide vision and schedules for assigned software and / or hardware changes.

  • Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades.   

  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate.

  • Manage Oracle RDBMS 11g / 12c for the Enterprise. Lead the support of a highly available Oracle RAC infrastructure platform.

  • Install Database Server software, design and build databases, schemas, stored procedures, and other database objects

  • Set up routine database backup procedures and disaster recovery procedures, perform database recoveries.

  • Install and support the database components of packaged database applications, support database connectivity from client applications.

  • Design and implement database security schemas.  Install routine security related patches.

  • Provide 2nd level support for Oracle RDBMS for end users, application and administration teams. The candidate must be comfortable in addressing critical incidents.

  • Support Oracle RAC / Log shipping / Oracle DataGuard to support Oracle RDBMS instances.

  • Provide systems metrics, root cause analysis and proactive monitoring and communicate any performance degradation to management.

  • Adhere to all company authored policy, procedure and standards documents.

  • Author policy, procedure and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience.

  • Ensure ongoing adherence to all relevant compliance regulations that may govern the GM Financial UK Plc business and complete all regulatory knowledge training where applicable in a timely fashion.

  • Provide support for critical system changes outside of business hours.

  • Participate in an on call rota with other members of the team.

     

    Qualifications & Experience:

  • Successful candidate will have a minimum extensive experience working with enterprise level Oracle RDBMS services including extensive project related work, preferably application development projects and packaged application installation projects.

  • Experience of supporting global organizations.

  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, log issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.

  • Extensive experience performing RDBMS software installation, database creation, database sizing, establishment of backup and recovery procedures and scripts, database performance tuning

  • Experience with Oracle RMAN and Oracle RAC

  • Oracle certified preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to build on others ideas.   

  • Expert level knowledge of  Oracle RDBMS 11g / 12c

  • Expert knowledge of SQL including  PL/SQL.

  • Thorough knowledge of Database Clustering and Replication technologies.

  • Thorough knowledge of UNIX / Linux and UNIX scripting.

  • Knowledge of logical, physical, and data-warehouse modeling is desired. 

  • Knowledge of Multi National Character sets (Globalisation).

  • Knowledge of capacity management and performance monitoring toolsets e.g. TOAD
