Unix/Linux Enterprise Systems Engineer (RHEL6, unix scripting) 

This role involves working within the Operations team and assisting in the support and maintenance of RHEL infrastructure and services.  The role is for an International Finance Company - comprising 2,700 users over 25 sites in 17 countries. The candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong analytical and troubleshooting skills and be comfortable working within a truly global environment. 

Strong experience in UNIX / Linux configuration and administration. 

Position Objectives:  

  • Provide internal and external customers with excellent customer service while striving to provide world-class service.

  • Provide technical support for projects as part of a wider team of Operations Engineers

  • Effectively communicate current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the line manager.

  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.

  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks.

  • Plan, prioritize, and provide schedules for assigned software and / or hardware changes.

  • Study and analyse the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades.   

  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate.

  • Manage RedHat Enterprise Linux v5 and v6 for the Enterprise. Lead the support of a highly available RHEL infrastructure platform.

  • Implement defined security or regulatory standards to “harden” or “lock down” managed systems.

  • Monitor and mitigate system vulnerabilities and/or observed weaknesses.

  • Install patterned builds, system patches and application updates as directed.

  • Conduct audit compliance assessments and initiate corrective action.

  • Devise, apply, document and monitor backup and recovery solutions to ensure protection of data.

  • Install Operating system software on both virtual and physical infrastructure..

  • Provide 2nd level support for UNIX / Linux for end users, application and administration teams. The candidate must be comfortable in addressing critical incidents.

  • Provide systems metrics, root cause analysis and proactive monitoring and communicate any performance degradation to management.

  • Adhere to all company authored policy, procedure and standards documents.

  • Author policy, procedure and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience.

  • Ensure ongoing adherence to all relevant compliance regulations that may govern the GM Financial UK Plc business and complete all regulatory knowledge training where applicable in a timely fashion.

  • Provide support for critical system changes outside of business hours.

  • To participate in an on call rota with other members of the team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Successful candidate will have extensive experience working with enterprise level UNIX / Linux services including extensive project related work.

  • Experience of supporting global organizations.

  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving performance issues, clustering issues, log issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.

  • Extensive experience performing RHEL O/S installation, Server sizing, establishment of backup and recovery procedures and scripts, Server performance tuning including kernel tuning.

  • Advanced job related certifications preferred but not required.

  • Willingness and ability to build on others ideas.   

  • Advanced level knowledge of RedHat Enterprise Linux v5 and v6

  • Advanced knowledge of UNIX scripting.

  • Intermediate knowledge of transmission / connectivity protocols

  • Intermediate knowledge of high availability solutions (Linux HA / HP Service Guard)

  • Intermediate knowledge of storage systems and storage area networks

  • Intermediate knowledge of cross platform integration

  • Intermediate Knowledge of Configuration Management and deployment, management and monitoring toolsets (e.g. RH Satellite)

  • Knowledge working within a VMware host/guest environmentSimon Long
